I'm currently a freshman at UCSD and trying to decide whether or not I should transfer. UCSD is a great school and has probably the best predent program in the country, which I have consistently been part of, but I want to go to a more prestigious college, such as Wellesley. UCSD is ok, but I don't love it or anything. Some of the problems are that the professors here are too busy doing their own research, they simply do not care for the students. I want to go to a college, where the professors have a passion for teaching.

I'm doing a study abroad program next year (taking advantage of some of the UC programs, since I'm stuck here anyway) so if I do transfer, I will transfer my junior year. By that time, I will have probably finished most prerequisites at UCSD. I want to become a dentist, but I also value my education, and that is why I want to have a liberal arts education at a "fancy" ivy-league/seven sister school. Because Wellesley is a very demanding school, I am afraid that I might not keep up my UC GPA if I transfer to Wellesley.

"Wellesley College is a women's liberal arts college, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, that opened in 1875, founded by Henry Fowle Durant and his wife Pauline Fowle Durant. According to the 2009 U.S. News and World Report rankings, Wellesley College is the #4 liberal arts college in the United States behind Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore." Wiki.

Should I transfer?

UCSD has a great reputation in CA, and is a feeder school of many dental schools. Where the heck is Wellesley?

Wellesley? Huh? Do yourself a favor. Stay at UCSD.

lol if u go to wellesley u might not have to go to dent school. Just marry a guy from harvard or mit who is genius

In Wellesley, MA maybe?

I understand completely about the professors, though, and have many of those thoughts about my school. And if you think you'll be happier at Wellesley, then go for it. I always wish I had transferred, but I figured it'd be too late once I got into my junior year, so I'm stuck here now.

The only thing is that I get flaming jealous of all the pre-dental stuff they have set up at UCSD. We tried to do similar things at my school, but no one was willing to work with us :/

UCSD isn't even the best pre-dent program in san diego. SDSU puts more opportunities together and is about to have a fully functional all inclusive clinic on campus where they will assist and learn form the doc there. go to wellesley?! haha what a UCSD attitude. it's not the education that you're concerned with but the prestige! i hope you marry rich so that you don't have to waste your time becoming a dentist and be bothered by the lowly masses that actually need care. ugh.

Where the heck is Wellesley?

Is this a serious question?
I thought most people would at least have heard of Wellesley. The movie Mona Lisa Smile is set at Wellesley. Hillary Clinton went to Wellesley, which is the reason why I didn't apply to Wellesley last year. I'm regretting that decision now.

this has gotta be a troll !!! hahahaha brilliant. hillary clinton being an alum stopped you from applying??? hahahaha i love it. hahaha

The fact that Hillary Clinton went there is enough for me to recommend staying where you are. And yeah, I had never heard of Wellesley. Sounds expensive.

I don't go to Wellesley, but I do know it is a fantastic school. It's a top 5 liberal arts college with an impressive track record in sending its students to top grad schools. However, it is very, very different from UCSD.

You also get to pay that private school tuition, and you can tack that onto however much more you owe. The OP is right, UCSD doesn't coddle you. Professors only care about you if you really go out of your way.

That's an all girl university right?? I think one of my high school friends went there. It is a good school....but I DOUBT they have a good pre dental program there.

Jason, I KNEW you're gonna post something about SDSU in this one. Aztec pride!!!

Yachi,
It sucks, but there are so many people who dislike their undergrad institutions. For example, I am a 2nd year at Northwestern University, which I believe/hope is prestigious lol?, but I am FAR from being in love with the school...but's okay I guess. It's just a couple of more years... I need to fill the pre-reqs and peace outtt :xf:
Stay in UCSD. Just don't waste time and work your butt off. Everything should pay off in time. Good luck!

What is all this speak of a 'good predental program'? What makes a 'predental program' good? Any highly ranked school with a solid science program and a large offering of classes can be a 'good predental program'.

They probably mean that a good pre-dental program also provides lots of EC opportunities to its students... besides having real deep science core.

But, that would be like saying Princeton or MIT doesn't have a good pre-dental program because they have virtually no dental-related EC's or pre-dental club or rarely send anyone to dental school.

In my opinion, a good pre-dental program is motivation and hard work lol

They have a very structured pre-dent organization that also runs 3 free dental clinics for undeserved communities. Gives the opportunity for lots of first hand dental (and assisting) experiences which my interviewers always liked.

did that person seriously suggest the OP to transfer to SDSU? are you kidding me? no really are you joking?

...no need for school bashing here guys. I understand why you think UCSD is an impersonal school, especially with most of the science classes being as big as they are. They're not going to get any smaller going from lower div to upper div unfortunately. The pre-dental society over at the school is excellent but in the end its what you do as an applicant (e.g. volunteering, shadowing, getting good grades, killing the dat, etc) that will make you a competetive applicant, not the schools prestige (or the lack of it for that matter, though if you go to a less competetive school make sure you get 3.5+).

If you haven't checked out the pre-dental society, you should come check it out. I have to tell you just like the classes they have at the school, the meetings are big as well. If you find yourself not liking the school and see yourself being happy and excelling at the college you mentioned, then by all means do what will make you happy in the end. Although I have never heard of the school, ADCOMs might and even if they don't theres a reason they that little assesment tool called the Dental Admission Test....hope that helps

stay at UCSD, taking opportunities of UCSD like research. UCSD is a great school.
One thing i have to agree that all UCs do not have strong predent program

+1 👍 ucsd is a great school (like all of the uc schools!) the pre-dent program there is all chiefs and no indians though. they do have some excellent opportunities they can provide for you, and if you do well and take advantage of what you've got then you will have no problem getting into dschool, but if prestige is all you're worried about then you shouldn't get into heathcare at all.

Well said.

if your primary goal is dental school then transfer out to a state college like San Diego state. Why spends thousand of dollars more on some useless undergrad. degree so you can have a one on one with a teacher...(don't mean it that way) 🙄
