How difficult is it to transfer into an allopathic institute (coming from an osteopathic school)? My wife has been offered a job in another city in which there are only allopathic schools? Any advice would be great, otherwise I am thinking about taking the next year off (3rd year) and doing research to gain some kind of angle....

every school i have noticed states that they do not accept transfer applicants from osteopathic schools. your only option (other than staying where you are or quiting altogether) is to apply as a first year medical student and do it all over again. sorry.

There are some schools that do accept osteopathic transfers. Two that I know for sure are U. Nebraska and Brown. Check with each school individually.

A woman I know did her first two years of DO, and transferred to SUNY-Buffalo.

Don't listen to anyone - contact the programs, apply away, and see what happens. One caveat is that nothing is consistent; even if they say "no transfers, period", if they want someone, they'll take them. However, if they take foreign students, that's a good sign they'll take DO students.

What's the worst that could happen? You don't get in.

I am more worried about getting the Deans letter than anything...it seems that I could burn a lot of bridges, and then if I don't get an acceptance I am total screwed....
What are good/bad reasons for transfer, besides the obvious good one of spouse transfering jobs?

yep, i was also worried about the dean's letter but talked talked to her anyway and she said she just wanted me to be happy and understood my situation for wanting to transfer as a good one (bad ones she mentioned are to be back with friends, don't like the weather, surf is better on the W coast than E)...I think believed her. Anyway, my numbers were good (class rank, step1) and I made it & I thinks thats all that counts... but i was transferring for MD-MD school.

stingray, what is the timeline for transfer apps? i think you transferred after 2nd yr, then how did you have your step1 score already when you applied?

you start applying Jan-Feb, they review your app & call you for interviews if they like you. Try to take the step 1 in late May & when they get your score in 4-6 weeks you'll get notice just barely before you start 3rd yr rotations. the step1 scores is essential in most cases I've heard of to seal the deal. lots of people have to take the 1st-2nd rotation(s) at their old school and transfer them over when they get accepted. if you were smart you planned these specialties to be the ones you likely are not going into. good luck!

I am not sure I would consider this a good reason to transfer. Who is to say that the wife didn't request the transfer just so her husband might get to go to a better school?? Might not be your case.....

So what are some good reasons?

Spouse getting into that med school, parent dying and needed end of life care. Those are the best two I can think of.

dude, DUUUDE, whoaaa,

as tried to point out, as far as I know, your reason just shouldn't suck. transferring is nearly as competitive as med school entrance applications with the schools looking to transfer in the top students from other classes. numbers come first. your reason is akin to the personal statement: it can help you slightly but can also weed you out. There is "compassionate consideration" given to good reasons, especially if they include you having a family member/spouse at the program. Hope that helps.
