I have just completed my second year at a southern Dental School. I am really unhappy with the way the school is conducted from the disorganization of labs to not getting grades back in time to conditions of clinics. I really want to transfer to a school back near home either Maryland (top choice) or Temple starting my 3rd year. Has anyone transferred or know anything about the transfer procedure. I have done well in my 1st year (top quarter of my class). If anyone could provide me with any info. on this I would greatly appreciate it.

I have just completed my 1st year of school and want to start at a new school my 3rd year.

I tried to transfer b/c of family problems at home when I was in school, and it wasn't even possible for me. I was 15th in my class, and didn't like being away from my family. I applied to several schools, including the schools you mentioned and was unsuccessful. It is an extremely tedious process and very difficult. But throw your hat into the ring and see what happens.

I think if a transfer is going to happen it has to be in 2nd year. I tried to transfer from Marquette to UWO (in Canada) but it didn't happen due to curriculum differences.

Some schools will only allow a transfer if a position becomes available.

Some dental schools don't even take transfers (Stonybrook & Harvard come to mind). Our school only accepts 1 or 2 into the second year. We also had 2 students transfer to Canadian schools after first year (so they started 2nd year at a Canadian dental school). It makes sense b/c we start clinic third year, so how would they be sure that the transfer had adequate pre-clinical training to start in the clinics? So I'd go with JoshuaTree on this one, it would probably have to be for your second year, not third.

You've just described most dental schools, the grass is not always greener. Stay where you are, you'll lose at least a year if you do transfer.
