  1. Pharmacy Student

Im currently a third year (P1) But, i hate it here. On top of that, I cant afford it and I am having trouble finding student loans, and my parents dont have good enough credit to cosign, and theres really no-one else I can ask to co-sign. Im not really having difficulty with the curriculum (i have a 3.5 gpa right now and work at a pharmacy) as much as the environment of the school and it gets depressing sometimes. All i want to do is transfer out.

1) Will i be able to transfer out by just saying that Im unhappy here? Or is that not a good enough excuse? Is financial difficulty enough of a reason?
2) How hard is to to transfer pharmacy schools, esp temple and maryland?
3) is it even worth transfering out?

Im very confused right now🙁 so any advice is greatly appreciated
Thanks!

I want to look into temple or maryland's pharmacy school ( my dad lives in PA and my mom in MD, would I be able to get instate in both?)

You usually need a life-related excuse. I'd go with "My parents are moving to Maryland" and see if UMD will take you. But it can and has happened before.

isn't it highly difficult to transfer between pharm schools? curriculum is structured differently, hence, classes are different...i would tough it out as long as you can

Why are you unhappy? Is it the environment or something else? Why do you need cosigners for loans? Aren't you able to get GradPlus + Stafford to cover Cost of Attendance.
I'd be willing to bet that the admissions offices at temple and maryland could probably answer this question more thoroughly. At least questions 1 and 2.

In my experience, I looked into transferring schools in 2004 and it was nearly impossible, even when I had good reason for transferring. It's probably even harder now. The school I was looking into wanted me to repeat my P2 year and of the 3 or 4 I asked, only 1 would consider taking a transfer. I also would have had to take some pre-reqs I hadn't needed for my school. 👎

The only way you'll know is to ask them. I stuck it out and I'm glad I did. I wasn't too keen on another year of school and loans. In the scheme of things, pharmacy school goes really quickly and even if you're not happy where you are right now, it doesn't last that long.

my mom already lives in md, but my dad lives in PA, can i still use that excuse?

& i tried all of my loan options, but the way the school works is that for the first 5 years, when i fill out fafsa and get loans, i have to get them as an undergrad, so i cant take the grad loans out..leaving me loan-less. my dad wrote a check this semester, but i know he cant do that much longer.

&& so usually all classes and credits from one pharmacy school wont transfer to another?

I know this is an older thread, but I was curious if anyone knows what kinds of circumstances seem more appropriate for a transfer? I am not in pharmacy school yet, but I am engaged to someone going into the military, and it will be impossible to know where he will be stationed before I have to choose where I go to school 🙁. Does anyone think that is the type of reason that could help me transfer, once we are married?

I'm not trying to be smart or mean about it but it sounds like most likely it will probably have be a long-distance marriage. I know plenty of people who go to school in one state while their spouse resides in another and they just see each other every couple of weeks. I know it sucks for a married life but it is reality.

I agree. The military is totally unpredictable. Do not go into this with the mindset that you could transfer once your spouse gets orders.

I've been a Marine Corps spouse for 13 years, and we move all the time, not including dealing with deployments. I'm not sure about the other branches, but there is no pharmacy college that is realistically within commuting distance to/from a Marine Corps base. It's been a long source of frustration for me that I couldn't go to pharmacy college, although I did enjoy the years we were stationed overseas. (Kudos to Creighton for offering a distance program!) I do have to say that, any base where we've been stationed has been hiring pharmacists. If you are a military spouse with a pharmd, you shouldn't have a hard time getting a job, just look at www.usajobs.gov. Just get the degree first. Good luck!
