I am curious if anybody has any experience or knows how difficult it is to transfer from one residency to another after the intern year? I am currently a medicine intern and my boyfriend is awaiting his match results in ortho. My question is the how easy would it be for me to transfer to where he is? I know that it's a pretty general question not knowing where he will be for sure (probably a bigger city with lots of programs e.g. NYC, Baltimore/DC) but I am just trying to get a general sense of how difficult the road ahead may be. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Transferring into medicine programs is a fairly easy thing to do if you are going to a big city with many programs, especially new york. You will probably need the permission and signature of your PD saying you were in good standing to continue as a PGY-2 medicine categorical. I'd think you should contact every medicine program director in the geographic area of interest. Once you find the ones willing and able to accept you, talk things over honestly with your program director. Usually they are understanding of your situation. Just be ware that your PD has to hear the groaning of current residents/interns because they would be one person down and that would affect the call coverage and # of patients and interns that the residents must cover. They also have to find a replacement for you.
