I was wondering how easy it is to transfer to Cali from NY after 1 yr at a categorical (so transfer during CBY) or even CA-1 yr due to personal reasons. Can your program director just call up and find a spot?

Also lets say I go unmatched and only get a med prelim - how much more competitive is it to apply as a PGY 1 to anes? Would I have to go through the match or can I just call up programs and do it without going through ERAS?

And lastly, am I better off taking a yr off and trying to reapply to Cali programs or is taking a yr off not good?

Usually taking a year off is bad. If you do, I'd be doing some anesthesia related research.

dude, it's hard to get into most of the Cali programs, right? so unless you were competitive the first time AND someone drops out, you are not going to waltz right into a CA-1 spot.

even then, the good programs will fill those fairly easily so you might have to have a hook-up to let you know if something is available.
