Transfering

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is very difficult to do. Typically, schools require that you have a compelling personal reason, such as a spouse that is relocating to a different city. (Wanting to transfer because you cannot find researchers to work with at your current institution is not an acceptable reason. Basically, the reason has to involve either a wedding ring or a death certificiate.) Even with that, the school you seek to transfer to has little incentive to take you: they have to dig up funding somewhere to support you. In the past, the NIH would give an additional training grant slot to a program accepting a transfer student. The diminishment of the NIH training budget over the past decade has caused that practice to be discontinued.

I know of an instance when a transfer was possible - this was because the PI was scouted to another university. When the PI moved, he took his MSTP student with him. After the PhD, the student did his 3rd and 4th year at the new university.

Thanks for bringing this up. Even these sorts of transfers can be tricky. Over the years, we've had 12 instances of students wanting to transfer with their PI; only one was admitted. Some added considerations to these sorts of transfers is the level of independence of the MD-PhD program and the strength of faculty being recruited.
