Hi all,

I know this question has been breached a million times. I know that challenging is an incredibly difficult - if not impossible - feat. However, I still need some advice. Excuse the novel that is about to follow....

I'm from the west coast, currently wrapping up M1 in the Midwest. I've done decently this year - passed all my courses, average scores, but not remarkable grades or anything (I've been distracted for the reasons laid out below). I'm thinking I may need to attempt to move back to the West Coast. It's likely not possible after M1 given curriculum differences, but maybe after M2, next summer after taking step 1.

Here's the deal: My mother has been sick with ESRD for >10 years. Her heart has recently started to fail, her kidneys are completely shot, and after being on the transplant list for awhile, the transplant hospital (interestingly, the hospital/school I'm thinking of transferring into), are unsure if she's eligible any longer for a transplant given the other developing health issues. My mother's partner, has to work REALLY hard/long hours to provide for our family, as my mom is unable to work given the kidney disease. I'm feeling like I need to be back on the west coast to be closer to them. I'm distracted and far away and hate it. If it's relevant, the school I'm interested in offerred me a seat off the waitlist in my initial application cycle, but at the time it felt too late as I was days away from moving to the midwest to start school.

Given the situation, I'd like to reach out to the school I'm looking at transferring into, to ask some questions and see if it's even possible. But I have no idea who to call. Where do I start? Who do I meet with? Which end do I start on - my current school or the other school?

Go on their website/call their admissions department and ask if they accept transfers and what the procedure is.

Generally from what I have seen online, transfers occur between 2nd and 3rd year and you need 1) A compelling reason to transfer (aka you do), 2) A school that accepts transfers, 3) That school to have availability to take on another student, 4) A reasonable Step 1 score

thanks for the response. I guess I was unsure if I should be calling admissions or their office of student affairs. i fear that even if I have a good reason and get a good step score, their class won't have any spots for me and I'll be SOL. unfortunately, there are not a lot of schools in the area. just one. feeling very defeated.

Have you looked into a taking a 1 year leave of absence to help out at home? Its not the best option but its better than dropping out
