Anesthesia works a bit different than Peds or other specialties. In most cases, residents match for both their PGY-1 Prelim year (usually in Medicine or Surgery) and their PGY-2/CA-2 position in Anesthesia at the same time during the match.
I do not know if you would be required to repeat your intern yearm or if Anesth programs would take a Peds PGY1 as a sufficient Prelim year. Perhaps some Anesth residents can comment on this.
What you can do is this:
1) if your intern year is acceptable, you can apply for a PGY2 spot in Anesthesia through the match for next year (starting 2005).
2) you can check sites which list open spots and contact those programs to see if they are accepting applications;
3) check with your program's Anesthesia department to see if they know of any spots,
4) if you need to repeat your intern year, go ahead and apply for Prelim Med or Surg spots now, and either also apply for Anesth at the same time, or again hold out until next year. Bear in mind that most PGY2 spots will be filled the year prior, so you may not have much to choose from shoudl you choose the latter option.
The match rate for Physicians (ie, those that are not 4th year medical students) IS lower than for final year students. I do not fully understand the reasons why but suspect that some of it has to do with HCFA funding, people reapplying who were fired from programs or just took a lot of time off frm clinical duties.
