I am currently attempting to transfer due to a serious family health situation, but I just wanted to check with you all to make sure that if this transfer attempt doesn't pan out (which I realize is highly likely), my originial med school will take me back, right? This is just the "understood" policy, right? When I asked my Dean & faculty members for letters of recommendation I made sure to use the words "transfer *attempt*", so they'll understand that if the transferring doesn't work out, I'll want to return, right?

Thanks for any insight into this situation 🙂

I would guess that the faculty knows how rare a transfer is and not to consider you gone unless you have proof of transfer. No harm in making sure though.

I'm sure they know you'll want to return but it doesn't hurt to double check with student affairs.

By the way, there's something I've always wondered regarding transferring. I know that you need to get faculty members for letters of recommendation so who do you ask if you've only been at the school for 2 years? At my school, we have tons of lecturers and they usually only give a lecture or two for a class. Unless you've done shadowing or research, I really don't see how anyone can establish a decent relationship with a faculty member in that short span of time. Do you just approach a seemingly nice faculty member, give them your CV, and ask them to write a letter for you? Or is it common to establish connections with faculty members during your basic science years?

The deans of the two medical schools involved generally handle the transfer. You should not be attempting to transfer without the full backing of your dean. You have a valid reason to tranfer (illness) but you still need the support of your school's administration.

Thanks for the input!

And Zweisamkeit, to answer your question about the faculty letters of rec... I asked the faculty leader of my 'essentials of clinical medicine' small group and the faculty member who led my M2 pathology lab small group. I guess I lucked out being in two 'small group' settings that were led by faculty members.
