This is my first year at TCOM in texas and although i'm enjoying the student environment i was thinking of transferring to another DO school. Has this been done and is it advisable?

i want to be out in california for residencies and would like to be there to do the majority of my rotations. here at TCOM they prefer 3rd years to do rotations in texas first before doing rotations out-of-state and internationally.

not sure how much of a gain i would get if i transferred...any ideas?

plus, i've been in texas from grade school til now and i just. want. out.

I wouldn't. Your in-state tuition is dirt cheap! Why the &^#@ would you want to that? Just wait an extra year, IMO.

Hey I'll trade places with you! I'm from Texas, but in school in Pennsylvania. See if TCOM will take me for my rotations.

Hey, this is great b/c I really want to go back to TEXAS in two years!! I hope it works out for you

Only transfer reason I personally have heard was medical treatment and family reasons. Not "because I want to be in a different state". If you didn't want to be in Texas I would have applied only to the schools where you wanted to be, not "apply everywhere and get in where you can" 🙂

Why would you want to transfer to a school that is less successful? TCOM is one of the top 3 osteopathic medical schools. You will truly have an advantage when applying to residencies.

If you transfer to a california school, you will only hurt yourself. Residency admissions isn't based on geography. You can do as many electives as you want in California or out of state. Only your required rotations would have to be done around there.

Also, why would you want to pay 15-20,000 extra dollars per year to go to a less competitive school?

It sounds like you haven't done your research.

Yes, it has been done. A girl in my class, at the beginning of second year, wanted to transfer to another school. She did. The reasons that she gave the dean and the transfering school, I don't know. I do know that she got married the following June to a resident in another state and started rotations as a student from the new school. I do know that she had a lot of paper work to complete in order to make sure that the credits would transfer over. I would strongly advice to do your research and talk to the other school to see if everything your already completed will count. You don't want to have to repeat another year if credits/classes aren't transferable. Then you'd end up spending more money and have more stress. Take care and I hope it all works out.

just what is a top osteopathic program? Are they even ranked? If so, I'd like to know. I'm at KCOM, I wonder if it sucks or not.

And we all know that means a whole hell of a lot.

The best medical school in the world is the one you go to and are happy at.

The worst medical school in the world is all the rest.

Are you sure you want to know? I mean if you find out it is not one of "The Top Schools" you may loose all self respect and wind up wallowing in self pitty for the rest of your life because you will never amount to anything.
