Wondering here how possible it is to transfer medical schools. When is this usually done? After first year? second year? Are many students able to do this and what reasons are generally acceptable?

Not a whole lot of transferring happens in med school -- nothing like undergrad in this respect. Usually it happens after second year, assuming Step 1 scores are good.

I’m just finishing first year and a classmate of mine will be transferring this summer. The reason he is transferring is to be closer to his wife and kids. I guess he did good enough this year to be accepted at the other school. The interesting thing is, our school uses organ systems, the other school uses a traditional curriculum and he doesn’t have to do anything extra.

Deleted - please do not email for advice-some people get very angry when they aren't told what they want to hear.

Yes, this means you! I will ignore all emails asking for advice on this topic - I don't need the grief.

I sent you a PM about how I transferred schools between second and third year. I have some inside dirt if anyone wants more info.
I'd like more information on how you did this. I'm thinking of trying to transfer after my first or second year. I will be an M1 this fall. Med school is taking me 2000 miles away from my fiance. He can't move to where I am currently planning to go, but may be able to move to a different location. I didn't get into the only school in the state where we live now. bummer.
