Transgender question: 🙂

Hello there. I am wondering can anyone enlighten me and tell me what the attitudes toward transgender people are in the American health care system. How are transgender people viewed in hospital setting? Amongst Physicians and Allied Health personal is there any discrimination towards transgender people at the work place? I am doing a paper on the attitudes towards transgender people in the health care field. There isn’t that much up to date stuff out there but if anyone (M.D., D.O, Nurse, P.A, etc) can give me some info, a link, or even a personal opinion will be great. Actually a personal opinion would be incredible. If anyone chooses to tell “their” story just tell me if you are a Doc, nurse, EMT etc. My professor is an MD so….that would be great if I get it from the horse’s mouth. Thank you so much. This website is such an incredible source of information. 👍

I don't get it. If he had a penis, but was dressed as a woman then he wasn't transgendered. Maybe he was in the process, but he wouldn't go to a gynecologist at that point unless he was in some kind of psychic crisis.

I'm lucky enough to live in the Bay Area, which has plenty of resources for transgender folks. Even so, there is definite tension around health care, especially around finding a provider that can be open to your health care needs as a transgender person. I found a link to UCSF's LGBT center, maybe they have some resources?

I grew up doing theater so I was aroung gay people all the time. I thought it was perfectly normal so I couldn't understand why all my fellow SE Kansas hicks we offended by the notion. So I figured I was rather open...


But the whole transgender thing threw me...I didn't know how to deal with it and I made justifications for why these people were off base. Then I was forced in a class to watch the movie "Southern Comfort", which is about transgender folk dealing with the incessant crap from everyone else, including the medical "professionals" - in quotes because those that practice as professionals in the context of the latin root of the meaning should have known better.


If you response to the topic of transgendered folk is to make fun or dismiss, then maybe you need to watch that movie.


Compassion should trump preconcieved notions.
