For those of you that had a year off between undergrad and dental school what did you do?

This is geared mostly towards people that were reapplying, unsure of what they wanted to do after graduating, etc.

I think the best thing you can do is explore the dental field. Get a job at a dental office or if you can't do that then volunteer. If you can get a position as an assistant, that would probably be ideal, but even somethng clerical in a dental office will give you a lot of exposure to what goes on.

If you have the time and get the chance, go travelling. It might a good time to look at hosteling or backpacking around Europe or Australia. Once you're deep into debt and have lots of responsibilities, it's hard to get away for a trip like that.

Some people can still do it after they graduate, but it does make a dent in your income of course. Then again money isn't everything!

i took a year off to teach high school, and it was the best thing i ever did. i didn't do anything in particular to prep for d-school.. just showed up. it took a few weeks to get in the groove but now it's normal for me to go to the library and study for 5 hrs/day and i'm doing just fine (A's and B's).

i suggest spending your final few weeks before dental school doing something you absolutely love--reading, traveling, outdoor activities..whatever. you will have close to zero time that you can do these things without having school stuff in the back of your mind.
