Hey folks, I was looking and couldn't find any threads related to this and since we all have to apply to this I thought maybe this forum would be a good place to discuss. Just let us know where your interview invite is and anything about the program you may know. I personally do not know much about most of the transitional/prelim years and could use words of wisdom if anyone knows them. I'll start:
Invites at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (California-transitional)
Kaiser Oakland (CA-prelim medicine)

I was reading up on the Kaiser Oakland program and I feel like I must be crazy but it says that they have eliminated call for their interns. Night float admits and does everything after 8pm. Plus they cap each intern at 8 patients. Unbelievable....i think i just found my dream program

NF doing everything after 8 pm isn't necessarily THAT much easier. Basically whenever you end up doing NF, it'll be like a floor month, at night, but you have to cross cover who knows how many patients, and there is no rounds or any teaching. However, i must say overnight call sucks (a lot. . .i just came off of one 😎 ), so splitting things up for a day shift and a night shift does have it's plusses. I'm just saying it's kind of a trade off. Cross-covering and admitting at the same time is HARD. So if NF at kaiser does that, it's not exactly a sweet relaxing time. With overnight call, a NF that strictly does cross-coverage takes the load off off of the admitting team allowing them to focus on admissions. This makes overnigh call a little easier at not too big of a "cost".

capping at 8 patients is nice. . . Not that carrying around 8 patients at a time is a piece of cake though.

This coud be tough because there are SOOOO many prelim programs at there. But for what it's worth, I'm interviewing at

The Medical Center Columbus, GA (Transitional)
Medical College of GA (prelim med)
Morehouse School of Medicine (prelim med)
UAB-Montgomery (prelim med)
Mayo at Jacksonville (Transitional--it's not a separate interview, if you're invited for anesthesiology and applied for their TY, they will consider you)

Obviously I'm trying to stay in the southeast!

Well I have a whooping one interview at John Peter Smith for Transitional year...I only applied for TY, and I guess I'll add some pre-lim med as an option if I don't get more interview invites by Oct 28 (my projected freak out date)

Uhhh...I cap at 5 patients on night float.

Also night float is way better than overnight call, cause you can admit them and not worry about all the internal medicine residency BS that drives you f'ing nuts like on the phone consulting 5 services for pneumonia, or whatever. Thats the kinda crap that keeps you way past 1 pm the next day, especially at academic centers. Then when you're on the floors your overnight h&Ps and general workup is already done for you. Win/Win. Dont get me wrong tho, night float sucks (I'm livin it right now), but not as bad as overnight call.

Yeah, I have had the same problem and have heard from only 6 California prelim programs. I haven't heard from CPMC, St. Mary's SF, Loma Linda, or UCLA Olive View (although I got an e-mail from Olive View several weeks ago stating that my application should be reviewed within one week). I'm starting to get nervous since I only applied to 11 programs and Kaiser SoCal rejected me for no apparent reason last week. 🙁

To the ERAS applicants for the Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital
Transitional Year (pertaining to the 2007-2008 academic year):

We quite recently have decided that the Transitional Year program here would
be closed once the current group of PGY-1's is done with the year. In late
October we received regulatory information that prompted us to finalize this
decision. It was actually not expected that we would conclude this process so
early, but we did indeed hear from the appropriate committee of the
Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education sooner than anticipated.
Our decision was not based on any immediate academic concerns or other
deficiencies raised by the ACGME or by our own ongoing monitoring. We will be
recruiting an increased number of preliminary internal medicine folks. We are

To the ERAS applicants for the Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital
Transitional Year (pertaining to the 2007-2008 academic year):

We quite recently have decided that the Transitional Year program here would
be closed once the current group of PGY-1's is done with the year. In late
October we received regulatory information that prompted us to finalize this
decision. It was actually not expected that we would conclude this process so
early, but we did indeed hear from the appropriate committee of the
Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education sooner than anticipated.
Our decision was not based on any immediate academic concerns or other
deficiencies raised by the ACGME or by our own ongoing monitoring. We will be
recruiting an increased number of preliminary internal medicine folks. We are
sorry for the inconvenience and any disappointment this may have caused.
