I know some neuro residents doing for PGY-1 a transitional year (preliminary based, that is at least 6 months of Internal Medicine) instead of preliminary year...do anyone know to what extent is that accepted by the neurology programs??

kita:

Considering that I have just mailed my $1600 check to take the boards next fall, I have a small, light-blue "2005 Information for Applicants for Certification in the Specialty of Neurology" booklet in front of me. Page 16 states that, for three-year neurology residents, it is required that the PGY-1 year contains:

"A full year of ACGME-accredited training in internal medicine, or as an acceptable alternative, a full year in an ACGME-accredited program in which a minimum of six months of training must be in internal medicine, the details of which must be documented by the training director. The composition of these six months may NOT include rotations in neurology, family medicine, or emergency medicine. To ensure that these six months constitute a high-quality experience, they should emphasize progressive responsibility for the resident. At least two of the additional six months must be spent in internal medicine, pediatrics, and/or emergency medicine."

As a matter of fact, I also had to get a signed letter from my PGY-1 preliminary medicine program director which states the exact dates of training and the dates and content of each rotation. I hope that my response helps answer your question. Take care.
