Transitional Year?

I'm apply for a categorical anesthesiology spot this year. I was told that I can do a transitional year instead of a prelim year. What exactly is a transitional year? Is it more competitive than prelim spots? Is it cushier?

the only drawback to a TY might be that if you weren't to match into Anesth, some other specialties might not accept it as your intern year (small chance)...
