I want to preempt this by saying that I'm not an MD/PhD student. I did take a year off after 2nd year to do a pathology-related fellowship, and now I'm wondering if that was a good idea. I'm in the top quartile of my class, I scored well on step 1, so I know that I'm a good test taker. However, I now feel that I'm really struggling during the shelf exams in third year. The first one, I did rather poorly on (77th percentile). I expected that, though. I just took the IM shelf on Friday, and it felt awful.

I came here to make my thread because I figured that this subsection would have the most users with similar experience. Does anyone have any advice to get back into the test-taking rhythm necessary to do well on shelf exams? I'm studying on a daily basis, but can't quite seem to get to where I once was. I would hate to continue to do poorly and be frustrated through third year because of something that's easily correctable. Any help would be great. Thanks.

See the sticky: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=762097

Shelf exam performance, like most other exams in medical school, is more about preparing for the test than actually knowing medicine. Make sure you have right books and question banks, and are not just reading general non-test oriented material except as necessary to get honors evaluations.

Thanks. I must have missed the sticky as I was looking for the topic. Appreciate the quick response and the link.
