Hi, I am conducting a research concerning trauma and desperately in need of a nice scale assessing trauma history (various types of trauma). I am doing it as a questionnaire. If anyone has any recommendation please kindly let me know. Many thanks!!

Would the Violent Experiences Questionnaire (VEQ-R) work?

How about the Vrana-Lauterbach Traumatic Events Scale? I'm assuming you're working with civilians, but there is also a Veteran version if you want that.

Here is a nice article you can look, which describes a few questionairres that may be of help (with children):

Stein, B. D., Jaycox, L. H., Kataoka, S. H., Wong, M., Tu, W., Elliott, M. N., et al. (2003). A mental health intervention for schoolchildren exposed to violence: A randomized controlled trial. JAMA: Journal of the American Medical Association, 290, 603-611.

The UCLA PTSD index for children asks about 13 different types of trauma and potential symptoms of PTSD. Also yields "probable" diagnoses.

I think the best measure will depend on what you are looking for.

If you are just interested in traumatic event history the Life Events Checklist is a pretty quick one that is widely used.

The Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire is a really thorough assessment of trauma history, but is a bit long.

If you're interested in PTSD symptoms as well the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale is probably the most widely used and well respected self-report measure.

The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist is also an option--there is a civilian version and a military version.

These are all adult measures, but it seems that other folks have already offered up some good measures for the kiddies.

Hope that's helpful!

The UCLA Life Stress Interview developed by Dr. Hammen is another good one.

The DES- Dissociative Experience Scale

...or is that too DID-oriented?
