Hi everyone,

Is there any real benefit to being at a categorical IM program with a level 1 trauma center? Just curious as to why some of my fellow applicants on their categorical IM residency interviews ask whether the hospital/medical center is a trauma center... 😕

It would affect how medical or surgical the ER is in general. It's a more medical ER if there is less trauma.

I had a person ask this in my interview group on tour as well, later he explained his rationale for wanting to be in a "truama heavy" ER is that within this you would have an opportunity to see some wierd ID and other medical problems secondary to the trauma on medicine consults.

Do I buy into this? Not at all, I think there are much greater factors for a medicine residency then the GSW's your surgery cohorts treat which then go on to culture something that acutally isn't under Zosyn's coverage 😱 😛

The only other thing I could see is that it would attract stronger ER and surg. applicants and PERHAPS lower the pain for BS consults and admits... solely speculation.
