I would like to do some traveling in South America before starting residency, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make it work...so I thought maybe some fresh eyes would help.

My graduation is in late May, and most EM residencies don't start until the last week in June, right? That gives me about 5 weeks to travel...
For of those of you who moved to a new city for residency, how early did you move there? 1 week before starting? 2 weeks before? Hopefully, I will be going to NYC, and if that happens, will I just have to suck it up and pay June's rent for while I am away?!

Any advice would be appreciated...and any good travel stories.

and I highly recommend it before residency. South America would be good especially if you practice your Spanish which you'll need in NYC.

How much time to move on depends on you. If you rent and own little, not much. I usually give myself three days to find a place and another two to move in, but I'm a moving pro (done it almost every two years for the past fifteen).
NYC is a tough renters market. If you rush in you could end up spending way too much. Some of the NYC programs offer housing.
