Could anyone please help me with this question.

Which muscle is NOT a primary elevator of mandible :

LATERAL PTERYGOID or
MYLOHYOIDIAN
:scared:

Both of them assist in opening/depressing the mandible.
But whichone is correct?
Thanks ahead.

1st of all, lat pterygoid does not elevate the mandible. Elevating the mandible means closing the mouth ,infact lat ptery are the primary depressors of the mandible meaning they helps in opening the jaw and they are assisted by ant bellies of diagastric(suprahyoid) and omohyoid (infrahyoid).
So the answer should be Lat. pterygoid.
However, the msls that close the mand are temporalis(ant or vertical fbs), masseter and medial pterygoid.
suprahyoid msls elevate the hyoid bone and assist lat pterygoid in opening the mouth and temporalis(post or horizontal fbs) in retrusion specifically, ant & post bellies of diagastric.
Infrahoid- lowers hyoid bone and steadying hyoid bone.

hey jojo,
cud u tell us the other choices too (cuz both of them are not the elevators)
the only thing is that the lat ptery are the prime openers and mylo just assist.

That's why it's confusing.
All the other choices were : temporalis, masseter, medial pterygoid.
You got 2 incorrect answers and you have to chose...........but I heard something about the superior head of lateral pterygoid assisting in elevation.

Lateral Pterygoid. As the superior head of Lat Pterygoid also takes a small part in closing and retrusion (Lower head relaxed). But it is certainly not the prime elevator or closing muscle of mandible. And so the answer is LP.
