I considered the triple board briefly. Conventional wisdom I've heard is that it's best suited for people who want to do academic child psychiatry, i.e. a child psychiatrist who has extra background in the medical illnesses of children and adolescents (and may use this to advantage in his/her research). I talked to a couple residents at Brown and Tufts who really seemed to like it, but I didn't get specifics (I'm doing straight peds, so I didn't quiz). The obvious question is "are you really as well trained in [pick either psych or peds] as you should be when you get out?" The answer probably depends mostly on what you want to do. I've heard a rumor that part of the idea in creating the track is to encourage the training of more child psychiatrists (for which there is a HUGE demand) when some people, who are either undecided or turned off by the idea of totally giving up learning about childhood medical problems, would otherwise go into peds. I don't know if that rumor is true, but it makes sense.
