Hi folks. This is my first post on the forum. I actually found out about this place from an article I read at KevinMD about trolls in medicine: http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2014/09/get-rid-trolls-medicine.html

I really wanted to get some advice but wasn't sure if this place is like what's described in the article.

Can a veteran user give me their thoughts and experience? Thanks.

Medical student trolls. Forums like Student Doctor Network serve as a resource to those at varying levels in their medical training. In applying for medical schools and residency programs, some post their scores and extracurriculars and then ask their peers for an honest evaluation of their competitiveness. Even with scores in the 99th percentile and first-author publications, students seeking simple reassurance may face nothing short of mockery and ridicule by other users. Medicine is a profession known for its camaraderie; deviance from this norm is what trolls seek to emulate.

He's got it backwards. The people posting 99th percentile scores are trolls.

So you are saying what he says is false and that I won't get mocked for posting my credentials on here?

Petr Rholls, more like Petr Trholls.
That was my first thought lol 🤣 great minds...

Seriously, op, Kevin MD is a site that publishes some of the trolliest articles in all of medicine. For them to post an article decrying trolling is actually pretty damn hilarious.

Allo is fine most of the time, but pre-allo can be kind of rough. It's way better than it used to be though. You'll get a critical look at your app and it's weaknesses, and might even have some adcoms chime in to help you out. You've really got nothing to lose, I'd just post. I seriously wouldn't have gotten into medical school if not for the information and advice I've gotten on SDN. You really shouldn't write this place off.

(a) That article is terrible

(b) This site can be a very helpful resource to people at all stages of the application. There are a lot of posters who give excellent advice to applicants looking to get into medical school, medical students looking for tips on how to do well in school and on Step 1, etc.

(c) This site has a tendency to self-select for both a pretty high-functioning and neurotic group. So sometimes it can be hard to parse out the good advice from the noise that surrounds it.

There are trolls on SDN?

Also that author's grammar made me cringe.

Possible troll posts article by uber-troll KevinMD on trolling accusing us of trolling and then we troll the possible troll post for accusing us of trolling.

This metatrolling is too much for me.

Wow, you guys aren't so bad after all. I think Petr Rholls truly is a troll; talk about a trollathon!

Are trolls a recognized diagnosis in the DSM?

So are the trolls the students posting their scores or the ones mocking and ridiculing (rightfully, IMHO) for an utter lack of perspective?

Faculty trolls. Medical schools offer faculty advisors for students to assist with maximizing their chances of matching into their intended specialty. As anxieties run high, students turn to their mentors for help only to find their e-mails and voicemails unreturned sometimes for months on end. The inability to provide timely responses comprises a serious professional deficiency, one that would never be tolerated in students, and with faculty tasked with the duty of modeling professional behavior, we logically conclude trolls are involved here as well.
With all due respect, the faculty member is not your bish. They are employed by a hopsital which in turn makes them a faculty member at their medical school. They are working in a time when hospitals are demanding more RVUs and give them less time to actually teach. The author's comment on this makes him ridiculously entitled.

Agreed. You just gotta be able to pick out the gems of advice from the the less credible BS some people can post. Just be smart about what you're reading and this site can be a big help. It definitely helped me get into med school too. I just made sure to cross check the advice I got, and was aware of who I was getting it from.

If anything, I can ask my pre-med adviser a question and get his view on it.
Or I can ask here and get multiple views (from pre-meds applying, med students who applied, and on occasion a resident or adcoms) and I can compare that to what my pre-med adviser might have said. So, it's been quite useful in that regard.

Based on the available evidence, medical school medical school appears to be out of conTROLL...

I'm surprised this thread hasn't attracted our trolliest of trolls yet

Assuming you're referring to me, although I'm not a troll. I've been staying away after some people attempted to doxx me. It's not safe for poor Ark.

That said, I would like to thank the moderation staff for ending that episode and thus helping me, despite our disagreements.

Believe it or not, not everything is about you, Ark.

You're the biggest troll in the history of this board.

I'm wouldn't be surprised if you came out next week and said you attend Steward Medical School.

THere's trolls and neuroticism (I'm kinda neurotic myself) everywhere on this site, but especially in the pre-med forums. Especially pre-allo. With that said, I got a ton of advice that was absolutely golden from this site. I not only got into med school, but I ended up at the school I set out to get into from the beginning. I don't think my odds would've been as good without SDN. There's a learning curve to figuring out what's good advice and what's BS on this site.

There was a paper published earlier this year that reported a positive correlation between trolling and the traits associated with sadism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism. I've only heard of this one study on the topic though, so who knows.
