Trouble with intubations

Hi SDN,

I had trouble doing intubations when I did my anesthesia rotation. I'm interested in anesthesia, though but am worried that I wasn't able to pick it up quickly. Is this something I should be concerned about? Or will it come in time?

It will come in time. Intubation is not the importent part as anyone can intubate, but the pathophys and clinical thinking that matter the most.

Yeah, don't judge anesthesia based on procedures - that stuff comes with time and practice. Sure, some people pick up stuff like that quicker than others but in the end, they all come to the same point. If you like anesthesia, go for it.

Thanks, I just felt like a tool. One 4th year did all his required intubations in like a week. Thanks for the encouragement.

that's part of why you have to do a 4 year residency to be an anesthesiologist. The technical abilities will come with practice 🙂

In anesthesiology, it's ultimately more important what is between your ears than what is in your hands. As others have said, manual skills will come with time and practice. Good luck. Don't give up.

i wanted to take to intubations like a fish to water. but that isn't reality, it takes some practice. an attending told me it takes 50ish to be comfortable...that seems about right.
