False for plants i think, but i'll let the plant freaks confirm 🙂
 
the haploid zoospores develope into multicellular haploids, males and females.
they then release haploid eggs and sperm, respectively, to regain diploidy for the future generation. thus the term alternation of generations. if diploid plants gave birth to diploid offspring that fertilize eachother, you'd keep doubling your chromosome number each time. every single organism must alternate at some time to reproduce
