TUCOM - CA Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wait, so you got into a med school last year and you declined or are you still talking about this year waitlist at Touro-CA?
yeah I think the MCAT people hate science majors:laugh:. Seriously, I think if I can get 2 more points on the verbal, A lot of doors will be opened for me, and I mean A LOT. BTW are you on high, medium or low-waitlist?

Well, how low is low regarding these scores?

Sorry for the confusion. I meant this year's waitlist. I'm on the high waitlist as well, but luckily I have a second choice school should I not get into Touro-CA. It sucks on the conscience to hold a spot that I most likely will turn down when you know many students only have waitlist positions.

On a side not, from what I understand, virtually all students on the high waitlist get accepted. You sure you wanna redo the MCAT and not have summer to relax and have fun before the storm hits?

For me, the storm has been here since the day I had to take that verbal crap:laugh:. Honestly, I plan on going crazy this summer after I am done with plan A and plan B. I'll go travel around the country for 1 month.

Good thing about the waitlist at TUCOM is that it kinda guarantees you a spot whether for this year or next year.

Since there are no current TUCOM-Ca waitlist threads, I thought I would start one.🙂

It's time guys! May 22 (today) I believe is the last day they make acceptance offers....anytime after today I believe they start choosing off the waitlist!

Is anyone else on the waitlist for TUCOM-Ca?

I'm on the waitlist too.

I emailed Dr. Haight and was informed that because they just finished interviews, they won't begin looking at waitlist until the first to second week of June. But we should expect a letter with updates to the waitlist.

Anyone know if there's anything we can do in the meantime besides completing the FAFSA?

I am medium wait listed. Did Haight give you any idea as to how many people are high and medium waitlisted? It seems that this school interviewed until very late. From what i understand people on the wait list can be told they are in as late as beginning of August. I have another back up school but Touro is my first choice since i am from Vallejo. Any any of you guys accepted to other schools as well? GOOD luck to everyone 🙂

Good news, the waitlist has begun moving. Ijust received my unofficial acceptance. The official offer will be mailed out.

congrat dude.👍 How did you know? via email??? I'm anxious now:scared:

Congrats 😀 i wonder how many people are high wailisted... i really hope they get to the mediums!

Thanks Gpan! I received an email today from Dr. Haight. It's earlier than I had expected but I think it's good news for everyone on the waitlist.

Cal1984: I don't know how many are on the different waitlists. They do accept students right up till school starts. From what I understand they ration seats as they interview through May. Keep your head up, they have known to accept students off the medium waitlist.

Would anyone who recently got accepted off the waitlist do me a favor?
I didn't expect to hear Touro's decision until sometime in June, so I took a vacation overseas. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could keep me up to date with stuff like things they receive in the mail. Thanks!

Again, good luck to everyone on the waitlist!:luck:

Congrats on your first choice bliksem!!!!
Woo hoo! You did it!

Sherruns did u also get in? Congrats 😀

I interviewed on the last day and just got in! Good luck to all those on the waitlist. I've been waitlisted at several other schools for the last six months and the wait is completely agonizing. I ended up not getting in anywhere besides Touro and Western, but Western's class was already filled.

Peace.

Hi everyone!! I was just wondering if anyone else (girls only!) was looking for a roommate!! I've been looking into apt prices in vallejo....while the 1 bdrms are decently priced, it is much more feasible to get a 2 bdrm so we can split utilities. I'm easy to get along with, and I think it could be a lot of fun! I'm looking into things close to Touro...I'll be visiting the area from June 3rd-10th, so if anyone wants to meet up and go apartment hunting, I'm down!!

Thanks!

PM me.

Is it impossible for me to get into Touro with a 2.9 science GPA? I really want to go to this school and I want to apply this year. Can anyone gauge my chances of getting in and what mcat scores I would need? I have good LORs and ECs and about 160 hours of hospital experience.

To get into Touro you should try to get close to 30 on your mcat since your science GPA is pretty low. You have a chance at getting in, but when it comes down to it, they will be concerned with your science GPA. You still have some time to take a few extra science classes to boost that GPA a little bit. Good luck !

Get a 30 on your MCAT. Apply at the beginning of the cycle. Do not delay! Do not wait for scores! Do not wait for grades! Apply early!

If you do that, you shouldn't have any problem getting in.

Guys, for those of you that are on the waitlist (low to high), let me be bold and ask you, what are your stats like in terms of MCAT, GPA, LORs, research and clinical experience, and extracurricular activities? Also, did you apply early or late? I just wanted to get an idea of where I stand with my current application. If you are comfortable in posting your stats, please do so as this will help me greatly. Thanks in advance!

since i haven't heard from Touro, i decided to just attend CCOM though its not close to home i really liked the school as well. Hope this helps some of the wait listed people 🙂

You know....I don't think it's impossible for you to get in. Honestly, I got a low-20-something on the MCAT, an overall GPA of ~ 3.3 (science 3.10), and I'm waitlisted...which I think is a good thing considering my academic stats.

That being said, however, I've been doing super-well on my science courses AFTER the interview (BIGGGG improvement, but WAAYYY too late). I sent in new transcripts to prove that I improved. So it won't be "as easy" to reject me as it was two months ago. I also got in elsewhere. So...do I think you won't get in anywhere? No, you might. Just keep improving and keep them updated like I did. Granted, if I improved earlier, I probably would've gotten in to more places...but, hey, I got in.

The applications open in August right? I'm actually applying for the MPH program at Touro for this coming august, hoping that it'll get me an extra push to get into the school, only thing is that it won't improve my science GPA. Do you think I should do this or take some postbac courses while they are reviewing my application?

give us an idea of what your stats are, so we can have a better assessment.

I have a 2.97cul GPA and a 2.9 science GPA. (I took some really dumb classes that I shouldn't have taken)
I have 5 LORs, one is from a DO.
Undergrad research at a Microbio lab - 15 months
160 hours of volunteer clinical experience.
Currently working at California Department of Public Health.
Was part of a Pre health Fraternity in my undergrad with numerous volunteer experience.

Ok, I think your science GPA needs to be above 3.0. If you think taking the postbac can help you with that, then that's the way you should go. However, if you're still in school, I think you'll be better off if you take more science classes and improve that GPA right before graduation. Retaking classes that you got C or D can be another option, since DO schools will calculate the better grades and ignore the bad ones in their GPA calculation.
Besides, You will need to get a high MCAT score. I'd say a score of 30 or better should be good. Your ECs are good, oh and make sure you have something to show at the end of your research (presentation, poster, even publishing paper). Good luck.

I really want to get my application out this year. I can do a postbac in the fall when my application is already in but can I update it with new grades? And you think I should hold off doing MPH at touro this coming August?

I heard that the MPH program is okay, but it will not help you raise your GPA or help you get into the DO program, no matter what they might say. So if you are interested in DO, save your money and just take some science classes!

MPH program= JOKE. Do not apply.

Thanks guys. I will be moving there in July. I gotta go party now 😀.

Has anyone talked to Haight about the status of the waitlist... do you know how many people are high waitlisted?

I don't think he will tell you that info. Just hang in there. Congratulation to all who got in already, you lucky bastards😀

hey everyone!

I just got accepted off the wait list this past week!

Just to let you guys know i was on the high wait list and i also submitted a letter of intent since Dr. Haight mentioned that it does improve your standing on the wait list.

I will be choosing TUCOM over ATSU-SOMA even though i liked both schools.

I have a pretty low gpa, only a 2.9 science. And I want to apply this year. I was hoping to do the MPH program so that maybe I'll have a slight edge in getting into the DO program. You think this is a bad decision?

The MPH program is not going to help you get in with that science GPA since it does not offer a significant amount of sciences classes to help you raise your GPA. Don't waste your money on the program, just take some science classes in the fall to raise your GPA. Good luck 🙂
