I am sorry this question probably has been asked. For those of you who have invited for interview at Tufts, did you send them a proof for 30 hours shadowing in a dental office? I haven't heard a thing from them since I paid my fee in July. I wonder this is what is lacking from my application. But they never contact me for that either. Thanks guys.

Ideally you should have sent them a letter of recommendation from the dentist you shadowed already which included the number of hours you have shadowed. I'm sure any letter with a number of hours and dentist's signature would suffice, but it would seem to be much more significant if the dentist actually wrote you a recommendation. I sent one to all my schools, not just the ones who required it. I also wouldn't wait for them to ask you about it before you start getting something together....

does it have to be 30hrs from the same dentist? i have 20 with one and 10hrs with 4 others...so not 30 from just 1 but 60 overall...is that a problem? and i did send a dentist lor

I don't think it's a problem as long as the total is at least 30. They probably would like that you have seen different ways of doing things. You should probably ask them directly though just to be sure 🙂

I sent them a letter of recommedation from the dentist I shadowed, but I am not sure if the dentist indicates the hours in the letter. Should I check with my dentist?

guys, where is this requirement on this years' ADDSAS, i look under supplemental information for Tufts and i do not see that.

is this still required?

question,
do i include my ADDSAS id with the letter or no? and it is ok to call and ask if they received this letter at certain point?

IF they are submitting a paper copy, attach the LOE form. If online, you do not need to worry about that.

well my two LOE form are going to go to my pre health committee and my chemistry teacher. so i can't print another LOE form with this letter.

so what should i do?

also tufts website.

Required Letters of Evaluation:

  • One letter from a Biology professor and;
  • One letter from a second science professor - Biochemistry, Chemistry, Math or Physics
Or

  • A pre-professional composite committee letter
does this mean i need to send in another letter from my biology professortoo?

or one letter from my chemistry and one committee letter is ok.

thanks.

i think you misunderstood what they said on the website. it's saying either send those 2 sci LOE OR a precommittee letter.

and usually if you're sending in a pre-committee letter, that's all you'll send plus maybe one extra letter from a dentist or someone else. correct me if i'm wrong though cause i don't have a pre-com LOE.

oh, but to answer your question, chem and pre-c loe should be fine.

i didn't notice that LOE requirement so i guess a LOE from an immuno prof and virology prof won't work for Tufts?? 🙁

lol. this thread is from 2 weeks ago already.

i think my dentist wrote on my LOR that I shadowed for about 6 months.. but i dont think he specify the number of hrs!.. is it going to be ok?

same here. i worked for him over a year. and i don't think he mentioned anything about hours.

Me too i've been an oral surgeon's assistant for over 2 years. My boss wrote 2 years assisting under him in my letter. Anyone find out if we need to include specific hours or if duration is ok?

It's going to be such a hassle to have him put a number on there when the schools already got my letters of rec. sent through aadsas >.<

Does anyone know what other schools require the number of hours in the letter as well?

Tufts will give interview invites w/o proof of shadowing and w/o a bio LOE. I had neither when I interviewed and I interviewed pretty early with them. During interview day, we were met with individually and told what, if any, parts of our app were incomplete. I just had to have my dentist email admissions to state I shadowed...really simple. Then I had to track down a bio LOE in a few days...wasn't quite as easy but doable.

It's been two years since I've seen the dentist that I shadowed...I don't think he even remembers me...I wonder if I can get something to work around this requirement. All I got from him is a recommendation letter...Darn.

You won't get around the requirement. Like I just said, simply have your dentist email them when they ask you for verification. You won't even have to take care of it until you get to an interview, so just wait and see if you get one first.

Ah thanks, I guess a email would be perfect. Let's get that gift basket ready for my dentist in case I get an interview. lol.

I called the admission office today and asked the same question.
I thought it was simply 2 from science course professors and one from the dentist you shaodowed. but she said one specifically from bio (but can be microbio) and one from either chem, math or biochem. and she also said that the LOR from the dentist has to be someone you shadowed for 30 hours. so supposedly you're not supposed to split those 30 hours to different dentists.

it sucks cuz Umich wants you to shadow at least 5 dentists (i believe)

All you need is proof that you've down your 30 hours total. Since Tufts is one of the few schools they requires this, I merely got my dentists to sign a time-sheet printed on their letterhead and had them mail it to the schools. Of course, make sure that your AADSAS ID is on there for ID purposes.

Of course, I think 30 hours is not very compelling. You will be embarrassed at your interview if you've only done 30 hours because I'd say a good portion of people there (who get accepted as well) have well over 200 hours.

Also, it's always best to have everything already turned in ASAP. Tufts is one of those schools that get so many applications that they can afford to just put people's apps on "hold" indefinitely. So you might as well have a complete file.
