For the Tufts Secondary, they ask if you have any "personal" reasons or "special cirumstance/history" that motivates you to go to Tufts or live in Boston. Are they asking you why you want to go to Tufts for academic and social reasons or for "personal" reasons such as my dad went to Tufts medical school, etc.? Thanks a lot!

my interpretation of that question was that all of the things you mentioned could be relevant...like you could say you want to go to school in boston because of the academic atmosphere of the city and the great hospitals...or you want to go to school in boston because you love the city itself, and think it would be a great place to live, and you're happy that such excellent schools exist in a city you like so much...or, like you said, you could play the alumni card if you have it there too. i think they're just asking why you chose their school/the city of boston...whatever the reason may be. as long as you don't say "i love the red sox and sam adams beer" you're probably good to go. in such a short essay with such an open ended question, i think this is probably more a question trying to get to know a little about you than anything else.

It is kind of a vague question. I plan to make a point about how I went to college in Boston and love the city, and the academic atmosphere and plethora of hospitals.... plus I'll throw in my usual spiel about why I like a particular school. It can't hurt.

Tufts secondary is snailmail invite, right?

i thought tufts made it abundantly clear what they mean when they ask "why boston?" I just left it blank, which is perfectly ok.

I don't think they're looking for a generic BS essay on why boston is great. I think by special circumstances and personal reasons they're looking for things of more significance like if your husband goes there and you think it would help the marriage to be in the same area or if a family member is an alum or if you did research with someone there and that motivates you. They say pretty explicitly that it's ok to put no which I took as a hint not to go into some typical spiel on why their curriculum is interesting.

They essentially tell you in their instructions that it is perfectly fine to leave it blank. I happen to live in the boston area and my mom has worked for one of their teaching hospitals for 30 years now, both decent reasons. You are all overthinking a stupid little paragraph!

sweet. leaving it blank. ill tell them why i love them during the interview. (crossing fingers)
