Hello all,
So I'm very fortunate to be in the position to make a decision between two excellent schools that I have been accepted too. I absolutely loved both schools during my interview and the students seemed equally satisfied with their respective schools at both Tufts and Temple. Both seem to have very strong Clinicals and prepare students quite well to become future dentists. Both schools are quite far away from me (I'm from Florida) so distance isnt really a factor.

The only real factor I've been currently weighing in on is the fact that first Tufts has a slightly larger class size of 170 vs 128 of Temple and the fact that Temple has in state tuition which I'm sure I can be eligible for during my 2nd through 4th year and that would save me some on tuition expenses as well as living in Philly seems to be more affordable than Boston. I dont think those are the best ways to judge both schools and I dont think its a fair way so I would like any input from anyone that is in a similar position or current dental students or even graduates at the respective schools.

I really appreciate any help that you all give...🙂 Thanks in advance

Similar situation as you. But since I never been to dental school I don't have much knowledge. I believe most pre-dents won't be able to help but give a biased opinion. Look at it this way: its not a bad problem to have eh ?

I'll be the first biased pre-dent. make a list of what you want from a school. Check to see if each school can fit those needs.

i dont know much about either school, i will be attending Temple though. I have been in contact with several D1 AND D2 students and I have a general scope of the atmosphere. I have heard that unlike many other schools, some of the students at temple have some free time ( from what i know freshmen year) to do things outside of dental school. Some of the students say that Temple , althought difficult, will start you off relatively easier than other schools, allowing you some time to adjust. Like i said, i personally dont know, but this is what i have heard.

From what I've heard, it's actually rather difficult to establish residency in PA. Granted, it's all anecdotal evidence, so I would suggest really looking into the requirements and perhaps calling Temple and asking them directly.

Good luck with your decision!

Freshman year, especially Fall is super chill. The Spring/Summer courses become a little more intense because Bobbericks Restorative II course is no joke and Anatomy just requires lots of attention, but the other courses aren't too bad. You have plenty of time outside of school. Even Sophomore year isn't too bad. You will hear horror stories, but it's really only certain times that suck. For instance, January was chill in D2 but February was miserable. March will be chill as well.

Don't get your hopes up for this. If you applied as an out of state applicant, then you can expect to be considered an out of state applicant during your entire tenure at Temple. A current senior moved out to Philly 6 months before school started. His wife worked full time and they bought a home in philly. He was still denied in state tuition.

Temple has a lot of great qualities, but just expect to be coming out 320k in debt for out of state. PM me if you have any questions at all.

I dunno, I've seen Temple and I don't think I wanna do things outside of the dental school.

Hey buddy, as others said I am also 99% sure they are gonna milk you for OOS tuition whichever you choose (its a business). I was accepted to columbia among some other schools and I still picked Temple! You should too. I know a significant number of successful dentists who went to Temple, my general gut feeling after 'reading' each school directed me toward choosing Temple (hard to elaborate). Yes its in a VERY rough area, and my personal dentist told me he was mugged at gunpoint by an 8 year old, but in the same breathe, I literally found out yesterday that his daughter just chose temple as well. The rough city will force us to not get too off track and stay studying lol. Also, the girls in the incoming class at temple are 😍

Hey, I'm not sure if anyone has replied to this in other posts, but if you are from out of the state you will DEFINITELY be paying out of state tuition for all 4 years. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get in state tuition... there are a whole lot of rules that I don't remember that prevent you from getting in state even if you live there a year before or buy a house or blah blah blah. I know on interview day Brian was very clear about this. I wouldn't want you to make your decision based on this and then find out that you have to pay all this money at Temple, so just want to make sure you know!!

Back to your question of Tufts vs. Temple, I only interviewed at Temple. I was invited for an interview at Tufts but turned it down, but I've heard great things about Tufts and I've seen pictures and it just looks AMAZING. I really liked Temple's program, but I wasn't sure if they were really going to update their clinics in time so I went with my in state school. For you though, the price I think is relatively the same...maybe slightly more for Tufts, but not a big difference. For me, I would like a smaller class size... 170 is way way too much, but it depends on your preference. Some people love being around a huge class where as others really want more 1 on 1 time with faculty (which would be hard to get with such a big class). Also, (again I don't know too much about Tufts program) but Temple will give you excellent excellent clinical experience.

In the end, Philly is probably cheaper.... comparing money/prices is not a stupid way to look at it. Both schools are supposed to be great and if you can see yourself being happy at both places then why not see which school will save you more money?

PM me if you have any more questions, I like talking about this stuff 🙂
Good luck!
