Has anyone completed the MS in CMB at Tulane? (It's the one-year program). Anyone going there this fall? I have been admitted, and I'm wondering what you have experienced/heard about the program? What were the classes like? Dr. Grisbaum sounds like a great guy. Lemme know what you think.

what kind of mcat scores do you need for this program?

honestly, i haven't heard much about any of the tulane programs, esp the genetics MS. but i think there is one snd member who's in the CMB and has good things to say.

I just graduated from the program and Dr. Grisbaum is the f*cking best!...as far as the program goes...it's cool...the classes weren't THAT hard...if you manage your time wisely, it's doable...you don't necessarily need MCAT scores to get in, but you have to have taken the GRE...I think the average MCAT scores of people who are accepted is 25...

Hey Sernic,

That's awesome. The program seems like a good deal, especially when considering the pricetag and classes. So how do the graduates fare in the med school app process? What are the research opportunities like--it seems as if there are a lot of profs to work with in a variety of areas. Can you take classes in the medical school?

Hey guys,

I have been trying to get a lot of responses for the one year masters program at Tulane. I just got admitted and am trying to get an appointment with Dr. Grisbaum sometime this week. I just moved down to New Orleans as I was offered a job at a sleep lab. If I opt to take the program, I will be working 3 night shifts a week as well as being a full time graduate student.

I had a 3.2 undergrad GPA with a 27 on the MCAT and got admitted to the program. I will be sure to post after I have met with Dr. Grisbaum and get more information about everything (i.e. how hard the program is, med school acceptance rate, etc.)

I however got a dissapointing private message from an SDN user who said that he had two friends attend the program and they maintained ~3.5 and a "decent MCAT score" (whatever that means) and neither of them got into medical school. They apparently got into podiatry school however, but this is not my goal.

I am looking forward to working my ass off (as my parents aren't rich at all), busting a 4.0 in the program and retaking the MCAT for a stellar score. I know that is a lot on my plate, but I am ready to make the sacrifice. I am going to go tell Dr. Grisbaum this and I want to see how he will respond. In prior emails he said that he is in constant communication with the Uptown Medical School people. I will post the answers that I get.

I hope to hear more from people who are interested/have been accepted/have gone through the program. Thanks all.

Its a good program but why not apply for a Masters in pharmacology or genetics which have classes at the medical school? If you're any good you'll receive letters from medical school faculty. You also take classes with medical students in the pharm program.

see if southerncomfort is still around. I know she went through the program. However, I haven't talked to her in months so I don't know if she still comes on SDN. But try PMing her and see if she is still around. She will give you some good information.

huh... i didn't know that pharm/genetics allow students to take med classes...has the app deadline passed for these? do you know how successful students students have been in the past at getting to allo schools from these programs?

The one-year MS in Genetics and MS in Pharmacology programs are at the medical campus. I do not believe that the former allows you to take medical classes. According to shredi, the Pharm program does allow you to take medical classes.

In contrast, the CMB program is not on the med campus and you do not take medical courses.

There's also an ACP program for waitlisted applicants. In this program you take the majority of the 1st year med courses.

Also, SDN doesn't permit cross-posting of the same thread in multiple forums. I would close this thread, but since it has some helpful info not contained in your thread in the postbac forum, I'll move this to the postbac forum and ask a mod there to merge it for you.
