Hi regulars. I'm new here can the experienced regulars give me a much needed line of advice?

I am finishing up third year, for the second time(!) in a couple of months. Yes, I had to remediate. Interestingly, the last course of my first third year was my third and last strike...and I was asked to repeat the year....I could taste the freedom of fourth year and residency. Anyway my class rank through years 1&2 was about in the middle. I scored a 219 on step 1. through this second third year I have all PCs (grading system is Honors, Pass with Commendation, Pass). I am really interested in anesthesiology, and really liking pediatric anesthesiology right now. I have a few things in the way of extra curriculars but nothing spectacular. I have no research or publications behind me currently. I've thought about externships, and asked students questions, but since some of you gentlemen are residency directors, I wondered if you could tell me whether or not they're worth doing for me specifically. I plan on doing significantly better on my step 2 than on step 1, which goes without saying. So to the ill-fated question which i'm sure everyone is somewhat sick of being asked: am I competitive?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If I said no, would it make you change your mind about pursuing anesthesiology? hopefully not. just do the externships, i.e. away anesthesia rotations. do good on step 2. actually your step 1 score is not bad. you should be fine.

Make sure you write a really good personal statement and explain why your M3 year went the way it went for you. Your remediation will be one of those red flags for those screening your app. so be smart about how you explain yourself but keep it short and sweet.

Remember, be genuine about your interest during Anesthesiology rotations which will reflect in your personal statement! 👍

thanks for the advice gentlemen. I feel an externship would be a great way to show a program that i'm not a "scrub," however, hearing from so many about how their externship program hardly ranked them, or how when they interviewed everyone there had done an externship at that hospital except for them...and this student was accepted at that program! I don't know if I should just relax and stay home..working hard here to get letters from the anesthesiologists here.

Pretty much I'm asking if anyone has heard of stories such as mine, or has knowledge they can share with me. Obviously, I'm feeling insecure about this right now.

Thanks.
