During this Fall semester, I'll be tutoring high school kids in scientific subjects. While I'm more than willing to tutor, but I want to develop some structure so that the program is efficacious and long-withstanding (i.e. can survive as I matriculate). I know a large part of tutoring high school kids involves motivation; how should I go about arousing their interest in the topics? In addition, would weekly quizzes be a good idea to help establish a baseline of competency? What sort of supplies should I look into obtaining?

Does anyone think some basic chemistry/biology/physics experiments would be worthwhile?

Thanks for the input and as always, all suggestions are welcome!

Know what you're talking about on a conceptual level.

Are you a tutor or a science teacher assistant? Tutors just help with homework, quizzes etc. and reinforce the crucial concepts involved. Doing experiments is going overboard. Fun, but not needed.

Your job is to make sure students can understand the main concepts involved so that they can do well in standardized tests, class exams etc. So weekly quizzes definitely help.
