1) So here's the situation; my father has early onset Alzheimer's disease, and his condition is such that for the last several years he has required a caregiver to be with him throughout the day. For the past two years or so that has been my job, and I mean that in the literal sense. My mother works full time and her insurance provides X-amount of money a month for the express purpose of hiring a home health care worker, and rather than hiring a stranger we decided it would be better for my father if my mother just paid me to do it.
My question is this: Last year i addressed all of this only in my personal statement, this year should I put on my application that this is paid employment? I dont know if it would come across to the schools im applying to as if im trying to pass off "getting an allowance from mommy" as genuine work experience, or if it would indeed look like a valuable experience to showcase. My reaponsibilities include everything an STNA at a nursing home would do and then some, so what do you guys think?
2) So this might sound a bit strange, but has anyone ever applied with a different race the second time around? Here's the deal on this one, last year I was utterly clueless about the process of applying and the intricacies therein, and had never heard of the idea of an "underrepresented" group, so when it came time to fill out my race I clicked "decline to respond" thinking it didn't matter. The fact of the matter is though i have quite a bit of native american heritage (and I dont mean way back when through history, I mean within 2 generations on one side of my family and 3 generations on the other i have multiple full blooded native american relatives), and its something I have been exploring and embracing more the past few years (I actually spent my entire last year of undergrad taking several classes studying native history, spiritualism, and literature on top of the typical pre med science stuff) and I do identify myself as being connected to that culture. Should I consider changing my race on my second app, or would that just send up red flags since I applied differently last year?
