Does anyone know if it is possible to be a family physican and also do something else like work in the ER. I think I would really like to go into primary care, but also want to do something else. Any insight?

sure why not

I know a two who have done so. They worked like 1-2 nights a week when they first opened up their private practice.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if they had to do two residencies and how they managed to do them both?

A lot of docs "moonlight" in the E.R. It's pretty common. A good MD friend of mine did his residency in internal med, but wasn't sure if he wanted to stay in that field. So he worked a little E.R. to pass the time and make some spare cash until he decided on another field. Not for certain about family med, though. In anycase, just the one internal med residency was necessary.
