Hey Guys, just wondering what kind of LORs you have heard are good to send to TY and prelim programs? Are you sending ophtho letters in addition to medicine etc.? How do the mix of letters you send to TY programs differ from prelim med programs? Thanks! 😀

Also, while I believe this topic has been raised before- the search doesn't seem to be working- so...does anyone have any thoughts on applying to both TY and prelim spots at the same hospital? 🙂

My application to transitionals was identical to my ophtho app. Same rec letters, same personal statement, etc. They know why you are applying there. They need you just like you need them. Any BS about why you love medicine or how good you are at it is just that, BS. As for the prelim/transitional thing, several places I went to that had both said at the interview day that if we initially didn't ask to be considered for both we could just let them know and they would consider you for both. I didn't want the extra ICU's and continuity clinics so I stayed tranny all the way, but they are usually very flexible. Again, they need you too and they also know that you need them as a stepping stone, so don't try to pretend like you absolutely love medicine b/c they've heard it all before.

Something else to consider... Some transitional years that also have prelim years within their institution will throw your application in the garbage if you decide to take their interview offer for the prelim year. I had a friend who was a chief during his transitional year (sounds funny, I know), so he did interviews and everything, and he tells me that was their practice. I have no idea which places or how many places will do this.
