FA (pg 301) says genetic predisposition is "weak, polygenic".

UWorld ID 848 says "Type 1 Diabetes has a very strong genetic component".

So, which is it?

I know UWorld is talking about the HLA-DR3/4 relationship when it's talking about the genetic component of type 1 DM. Whereas FA separates out the "genetic predisposition" from the "association with HLA system".

But anyhow, this always confused me. Why are they talking about HLA independent of genetic predisposition ?

Type I has a weak genetic component. When it is present, it is related to a certain HLA (forgot which). Type II has a much stronger genetic component (albeit multifactorial).
