M1 here, uncertain about specialty but have neuro/psych/IM leanings. I was wondering if it matters as to what "type" of research I pursue. I'm personally interested in behavioral research (... I think it might qualify as sociology/psychology with a public health flavor) and not chart reviews, clinical research, or, at the moment, basic science. Is this still seen as holding equal weight in terms of residency applications? Thanks for your help.

As long as you can get it published in peer-reviewed journals (higher the IF, the better) or presented at conferences (preferably national), then generally, yes.
