your state school is generally your best bet (except CA and TX)

i would say that if you're a TX resident, you have the best chances of landing a spot in TX ... Texans are commonly confident that there will be spots in TX and apply to only TX schools .. a few may not get in, but the following year, they will still apply only within TX .. opposite for Californians ..

I agree with mentoz. Texas is at the opposite end of the spectrum from California... with the exceptions of Southwestern and possibly Houston you should be guaranteed of getting in somewhere if you're qualified. And the Match system gets rid of the waitlist worries and people holding insane numbers of spots.

I would say you should add Washinton, Oregon, Colorado, and most other western states to states where your home state school cannot be considered a safety school (look at AAMC application and matriculation stats). Some private schools I would consider include Drexel, Albany, Rosalind Franklin, and St. Louis University. There are probably others but the key is to apply broadly and to places that fit your personality.

Outside of your state school (unless you're a Californian) it doesn't seem like safety schools exist with med schools. There are too many applications and the process is so unpredictable. I didn't even get an interview at Loyola, which I considered a safety school.
