Starting to look at programs that I want to apply to. Anyone know anything about the U Conn pediatric residency program?? Thanks!

What kinds of things do you want to know? I interviewed there this year, and was generally pretty impressed with the program. I probably would have ranked it higher if my girlfriend wasn't so close to Boston. It's a medium-sized program (17 per class now, and they're looking to expand to ~20 within the next few years), attractive hospital, residents seemed genuinely happy there. They have a good-sized department in all the subspecialties, but only a couple fellowship programs, which means the residents interact with attendings a great deal. I liked the program director and department chair. The major downside to it is that it's in Hartford, which is not exactly the most thrilling city in America, although having lived in Worcester MA the last several years I suppose I can't complain.

I can certainly tell you more, but I don't really know what you're looking for. Slightly more specific questions would be helpful.

thanks for the reply. My boyfriend lives in New Haven and I am looking for programs around there. I would love to go to Yale, but I am being a little more realistic about my choices, hence U Conn. I am currently at U Miami and its a huge city and I hate it. For residency I want a big enough city that gives me a lot of exposure without being so big that I feel as lost as I do in Miami. Plus, I want to be around happy residents and attendings who want to teach. As for fellows, I am not sure what I want there, I am still pretty clueless about the whole process. I guess my biggest concern about U conn is how hard it is to get in, and whether or not they see good cases since Yale is not that far away. I wonder if a lot of the cases end up going there. Since you are also looking into the New England programs, what have you found out?

thanks!!

Worcester is the center of the known universe. Where else can you go to one of the best art museums in MA (regarded by some in art circles as better than the MFA in Boston) and drive through an amusement park of an intersection like Kelley Square😀

A few people from my med school ahead of and in my class rotated at UConn a few years ago and liked it (and ended up as residents there). That's all I got.

So I went to medical school at UConn and spent virtually all of my fourth year at CCMC for pediatrics.

Pros: Amazing program director, great faculty, lots of resident involvement in care, great community athmosphere, stand alone children's hospital, plays a key role in the community, all pediatric sub-specialties (not sure about derm actually), primary to tertiary care.

Cons: Hartford, have to refer some stuff out, just starting to build up its research base, Hartford. Cost of living is a little high for what you get but is still no Boston or New York. With that said though some of the surrounding areas are very nice such as West Hartford. But don't expect a booming metropolis. Hartford is a ghost town after 6pm.

Overall I loved by time at UConn and CCMC. I ended up training elsewhere but not because I didn't like UConn. If you want any more specifics I can let you know. I am still in touch with some of my classmates who stayed there for residency.

Hey Jamee,

I think you should still definitely apply to Yale - give it a shot. In general pediatrics is not a competitive specialty, where board score are not that important for most programs.

In addition to UConn, you may also consider Brown, which sounds like a city size that you may prefer and an easy train ride (<2hours I believe) from New Haven. NYC is also an easy 1.5 hour train ride away from New Haven with numerous programs, but since you dislike Miami, NYC might not be a good idea.

thanks for all the replies. Antihero do you have the contacts for anyone still at U Conn? I am a little worried about it being a ghost town since I am coming from Miami, but again maybe I would like the quiet. Where did you end up for residency?

also thanks for the heads up about Brown. I looked up more schools around the area and Tufts is also not far away. anyone know anything about Brown or Tufts? Also, if you are in pediatric residency where did you go and do you like it?

I do in fact still have contacts at UConn including their rising chief resident for next year and a current intern. Personal message me and I will give you my e-mail and we can talk and I can get you in touch with them.
