Describe your major extracurricular activity, including time commitment, leadership responsibilities, accomplishments and benefits you gained. What special interests or talents have you sought to develop?

Help! I have several... I don't know which one to pick!

1. MMEP (Minority Medical Education Program) 6 week summer program geared towards prepping for med school. Dr. shadowing, surgery/autopsy observation, clinical & migrant clinic exposure, etc. Excellent learning experience but it was 9 years ago and only for 6 full time weeks.

2. Caring for my diabetic mother--she went blind, had kidney failure... I did everything from bathe her to take her to all of her dialysis, multiple provider appts... kept track of her blood sugar levels, injected her insulin, administered all other medications, cared for her surgical wounds... everything... while maintaining a f/t job and raising my three kids on my own. So, I learned much from this, and it was much more recent (2001-2004). But I don't know if it hurts me to go down the "sick relative" path...

3. Shadowed a Dr. for 10 hrs a week for a few months. Learned much, but this was back 7 years ago.

All others weren't as significant as these. If you had to choose *1* to talk about, which one would you choose??

Thanks all!

Olga

I'd pick #2, since it seems to have taken up the most of your time, thought, and effort. #1 would be my second choice, but it only lasted 6 weeks so I'd go with 2.

I'm also struggling with the EC choice for this secondary, but I'm going with the Ec that I've done for the longest amount of time and spent the most time on.

I would also advise you to go with #2 unless you have discussed it at length in your other essays. I would encourage you to find some clinical volunteer opportunities to do now if you have time since your other ECs are a bit older.

Good luck.

Well, there is a connection within that links all of those activities. When I answered that same Q for UCONN, I integrated several different 'activities' that all had a common thread running through them. Integrate.
