Hi, anyone here interview/match at U. of Hawaii, or is a current intern/resident?

My family and I are really interested in moving to HI and had a bunch of questions about the residency program, real estate, etc...

Thanks

I would like to second that? How competative is the program. etc. Ive got a bunch of family in Hawaii already, so it might be kind of nice.

i'm a 3rd year medical student in hawaii, currently finishing up my inpatient medicine rotation. i'm not sure what to tell you about the program... the residents all seem content but work very hard, the teaching is good but uneven among different attendings, and hawaii has wonderful weather except in the past two months. sorry, that doesn't help at all. maybe i can answer specific questions?

Pros: a LOT of hands-on experience. Like the above poster mentioned, the residents work fairly hard, since there are no "real" fellows-- the only fellowship programs UH currently has are geriatrics and general internal med. However, a cardio, GI, and ID program are currently in the works . . .
Cons: not the most didactic-oriented internal medicine residency program. In my opinion, a lot of the grand rounds are more for the attendings rather than the residents.
As with other community programs (Hawaii considers itself a "hybrid" of university + community), residents often have to update multiple attendings on pt treatment plans, etc. Kind of inefficient, but not unique to Hawaii . . .
I think I would have been happy at UH, because there are a lot of great residents, but the way I see it, residency is the last time we're formally "learning" on the job.
Gagolden, if you are concerned about the program's competitiveness (I think it was kind of competitive this year; I don't know about other years) and would like to be a UHIMRP resident, I highly recommend doing a sub-I so you can get to know the program (and vice versa).
