Does anyone who is familiar with the Neuro residency at U Washington in Seattle have any opinions on the program, how it compares to some of the major east coast programs. I'm trying to decide if its worth it to travel far and spend about $350 to interview there. I'm more interested in clinical training than research, although I understand UW and most of the major east coast programs are research heavy.

I just interviewed there. I thought it was a fantastic program. If you're still on the fence, I would recommend checking it out.

I already cancelled it. Hope someone else got my interview slot.

I was not a resident there, I was a guest resident. I performed my residency at nearby institution, thus, we had to perform rotations at UW. I can speak some but certainly not all.

The program include UW hospital, Harborview Hospital, the VA, and Childrens. Hospitals are dispersed throughout the city, thus, a complaint

Harborview is a very large hospital and is the county hospital, so you see a great deal of wild stuff there. Very busy inpatient service for neurology. There is no closed ICU, and I feel that most resident there become very good neurointernists, so to speak. Harborview is kind of strange in the sense that their ER is not staffed by ER doctors but rather internist and surgeons. They are very protocol driven. Plenty of neurotrauma. The stroke admissions not bread and butter per se. They accept from surrounding hospitals and states so the gold old fashioned ischemic stroke you never see, plenty of hemorrhagic strokes, SAH, etc. They do have the best implemented stroke protocol of any hospital that I have even worked out.

I did an elective at UW hospital. Very different place than Harborview. There seems to be a dichotomy of faculty. Some of your attendings are at Harborview, some are at UW, and seems as if they never really get together? Its seemed to me as if their residents were doing two distinct residencies simultaneously?

I also had to do neuropathology at UW. Cushy rotation and very lax!! It was a break!!! But since they do have an upbeat neurosurgery program, you will be a lot of good path slides.

Every resident that I every came to know there ended up with very good fellowship offers.
