Hey Guys,

I mainly need advice from anyone who has interviewed both at UWisc and UPitt....or anyone else taking the time to read this thread.

I have an interview scheduled at UPitt at the end of this month, but I am running short of money with all the costs incurred thruoghout this entire process. I was really impressed with UWisc and have been lucky enough to be accepted. So I am unsure if UPitt is worth the trip.

I have no idea if I will be accepted, and I am afraid I will end up losing another $200 and a lot of time. I know that in the grand scheme of life $200 and two days is nothing...but what is the point of wasting when I don't have to. I am also really sick of seeing and listening to the gunners from the Ivy League schools who seem to be in unbearably high numbers at most of the interviews I have been to. (This doesn't apply to all ivy leaguers, but a good percentage of you guys are really annoying and elitist during interviews and makes me want to puke whenever I think of being with you guys for 4 years...) Does anyone else feel this way?

Anyways...So for those that have been fortunate to interview at both.. what was your impression in comparing the two? I know this will be different for each person, but I am just curious.

My interview is ont he 25th, and I want to open the spot as soon as possible for someone else.

Hey Bucky,

While I haven't interviewed at either place I have a bone to pick with UPitt:

It has nothing to do with the PSU/ Pitt rivalry- after hearing similar stories, I just get the impression they don't care.

Take that with a grain of salt but there you go.

Pitt rocks and everyone I met there was really nice and had a sense of humor. 1st choice for me right now.

Pitt is a great school. Don't miss the chance to interview there (btw, not "UPitt").

If money is not too large of an issue, I would go with Pitt. Either school is excellent, however, with great clinical programs.

Hey!

I have been accpted at UW, but also interviewed at Pitt. I definitely had a WONDERFUL experience during my interview. My faculty interview was GREAT -- in all ways possible. I felt their clinical skills, programs, curriculum, diversity is MUCH better than UW. Don't loose this opportunity, and you never know if you will be accepted. Also, consider it as an opportunity to see somewhere different, and it may be a place where you may or may not want to consider for residency, too....so it never hurts. Their student hosts are SUPER cool. I just had a wonderful experience, overall! Different setting than Wisconsin...etc....if you need more advice, feel free to PVT me!

By all means, go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The students that I met were all nice and down to earth!

Good luck

bump . . . in the end, it's down to these two for me. any further thoughts?

I'd lean to Wisconsin. Better college town, better research. Plus it's Wisconsin, so there should be a free keg on every corner.

madison has better research

thanks for the input, everyone. i'd agree that pitt has the better research rep, while wisconsin has more of a primary care focus. the programs at both schools are versatile and provide excellent training in both clinical and research skills.

benbk, sounds like you were faced with a similar choice. what was your decision?

although pitt is higher ranked in the research category for usnews, you should remember that UW as a university is the second-largest biological research school in the country (in terms of grants awarded) and has some of the best scientists/facilities in the country. however, much of this is abstract research, not necessarily clinical through the med school, which is where i think the difference is. Pitt is good too; i really liked interviewing there, but for me it came down to i wanted to be a scientist-doctor, so i'm going to UW.
PS - the one thing i didn't like about UW's interview is they didn't really show you the main part of campus which is just awesome in terms of facilities and looks; had to find much of this stuff out myself

mmm, interesting. Pitt's got tons more NIH money, and a much higher US News ranking. don't know much about the undergrads, but that's not important at this level.

Thats in addition to the hundreds of millions being spent on the medical school alone with the new childrens hospital and med research buildings.

sorry, but this link does not equate to the medical school of UW being a better research institute than UPSOM. so the state's investing money, some of which will be going to the med school. that's good, i hope they make some interesting and life saving advances. Pitt is also building both a new childrens hospital and new medical research building. none of this is how the strength of research is judged anyway. they are the 7th largest recipient of NIH money, IIRC. they get more than duke, columbia and many other big name schools. they invented the polio vaccine, and basically made organ transplant possible. i don't wanna take anything away from wisconsin, but it's just not as big in research as pitt. btw, one could still get a great mentor and do kick ass research there, i'm sure. so although this is really semantics, pitt is still the more high powered research school.
