I have an interview at UAB Sept 21, anyone else?? Has anyone had an interview yet that would like to share about their experience? Thanks!

mine's tomorrow, i'll let you know how it goes!
wish me luck!

I'm applying next cycle but I heard Dr. Filler speak about the interview process at UAB. Some interesting facts:
1) you interview in front of the whole admissions committee. This is actually a good thing. Only YOU represent yourself to the committee and so, you don't have to worry about not meshing well with your interviewer.
2) they don't try to trick you with questions or ask really difficult questions to throw you off. They want to see you at your best, not all clammed up and terrified.
3) They interview around 8 people on the same day... always Wednesdays I think.
4) general dentistry shadowing experience is preferred. So, be prepared to talk about it

That's all I can think of from now. Are you in-state? What school did you do undergrad at? Most acceptances come from Auburn and then UAB and Alabama tie for second. That's really only because Auburn has the most applicants. This is all according to Dr. Filler.

Good luck! :xf: Report back with your experience 🙂

Stoshdawg summed everything up perfectly. My interview today was really laidback and low-stress (but I was still a little nervous). Dr. Filler really wants to put you at ease, and everyone there is very kind. Their main goal was to see if you're a good fit for the school, and also for you to get a feel of what UAB had to offer.

Interviews are on Wednesdays and started with a tour given by two dental students. Afterwards, you have lunch (which was really good), followed by the one on one interviews. All of the questions were very straightforward, no difficult questions at all. They will also love it if you ask them questions. Don't stress!

Thanks for all of your help!!

I'm actually out of state, I go to UF undergrad, so I was really excited to get an invitation to an interview at UAB this early! I'm really excited about UAB, so I hope I don't act too nervous! When you say they're interested in general dentistry shadowing experience, do you think they'll ask like what to do for specific procedures? (A friend of mine just interviewed at UF college of dentistry and said they asked her the procedure for a filling---I had my interview there over a month ago and didn't have any questions like that, but I was shocked to hear she was asked that!)

Congrats on your interview, glad to hear it went well! This whole process is just so exciting! 🙂

I'll have to defer to drgummy for specific interview questions as I haven't interviewed there myself but Dr. Filler said the reason they thought General Dentistry shadowing experience was good was because:
1) 85% of dentists are general dentists
2) you're applying to dental school where you learn general dentistry techniques. A lot of specialty shadowing is just premature.

This is not to say that they look down on shadowing other specialties. That is not the case at all. They simply think that General Dentistry is the most important at this point in your career path.

Good luck! I hope to be in your shoes this time next year :xf:

I interviewed yesterday as well, and it was a great experience. UAB has a really impressive clinical experience as you'll see, and the school as a whole has a great family atmosphere. They do nothing to raise your stress level, and the interview was extremely conversational. Dr. Filler is a great guy, and legitimately wants people going into dentistry for the right reasons and to pick a school they feel comfortable at. Do not waste energy stressing over this interview.
