So im new to SDN but needed to turn somewhere for advice. I got into a couple schools on Dec 1st and decided on Nova. Im now in the mindset i will be attending but i just got into UAB and this is shaking things up.

What are your opinions on the two schools from each and every aspect. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Nova. I liked the university. New campus, friendly staff, friendly students, solid clinical experience. Only downside is chairs, but it will be mitigated from what i've heard. I know nothing about your other choice. Maybe we will be classmates

If you're an Alabama resident, the cheap in-state tuition is reason enough (or it would be for me) to choose UAB. I don't know much about Birmingham, but Fort Lauderdale is fun, and Nova is gorgeous, BUT it is definitely not cheap.

UAB has a better reputation. Birmingham is also not a bad city and has some serious money in the suburbs.

Where are you from? Nova is realllllly expensive, you would probably save a lot if you were from Alabama and stayed in state. Plus UAB definitely has a better reputation than Nova.

I am a Florida resident so I wont really get a break either way. Nova's reputation is at times questionable and i think UAB has a good reputation. Anyone familiar with UAB that can give me its pros and cons?

Just make a list of all the pros and cons for yourself. Then factor in which school you feel was better for you and where you think you will succeed.

This talk about reputation is pointless. Unless you are comparing to an ivy, reputation is mostly a moot point, imo.
If you are interested in specializing, you can do so from any school with the proper grades, board scores, leadership, exterships, and research.

UAB, your state school. less debt, close to family, don't have to relocate. 👍

Definitely UAB. It has a better reputation and much cheaper. I think reputation does matter when it comes to specializing; schools with better rep tend to have more of their students go on to specialize.

UAB all the way. Besides Dentistry, the whole school has an excellent reputation. I'm applying to get into their Dental School also (once I finish up prerequisites). My husband is waiting to hear back on a position in their Anesthesia Residency program. They are top 5 or 10 in Anesthesia.

Birmingham cost of living is great also. I never thought I would want to live in Alabama but Birmingham has a lot to do and is affordable.

Good luck on your decision!

Ok, so I'm going to Nova, and I am just curious what all you people are talking about as far as reputation. Can anyone actually provide concrete evidence for WHY UAB has a "better" reputation? I would like to know.

I grew up in Florida, went to undergrad for a year in Alabama, then came back to Florida to finish up undergrad, and graduated D-school from Nova. Please take it from me, you do not want to live in Alabama being from Florida. Yes, UAB is a great school, but living in Alabama is quite a transition. You will be stressed enough as it is, you will not want to add to it. Just my 2 cents.

prob b/c it's "newer", but that's some bologna. One of the more successful endo's i shadowed, currently in nyc, went to nova for both d school and post.
