Anyone with any knowledge about the residency program at Univ of Arkansas? Would like some inputs. Thanks
I am a current resident in internal medicine program at UAMS. The program is extremely busy and geared towards extracting as much work from residents and more so IMG's . There is hardly any emphasis on teaching or scholarly activities . The program is also very unstable in the sense that residents are constantly leaving and coming and there changes being forced upon residents . The most depressing thing is that several fellows from different university and county hospitals across the country were shocked to see the amount of work internal medicine residents were putting in (or asked to do) at a academic university based setting. The program leaves much desired and if If I were to go to match again, will rank this program much lower. If any prospective US or IMG applicant has a specific question then I will happy to answer to the best of my ability.
The only good thing for visa seekers is that this is an H1 program , at least for now. Also it gives no preference to it's own candidates for cardiology and GI fellowship
UAMS IM does not try to extract more work from IMGs; this is a preposterous accusation.
Residents "constantly leaving and coming"? One resident quit last year; another took a leave of absence due to family tragedy and is back.
Of the current PGY3 group, one IMG (who applied to only one program at UAMS) and one American did not match into fellowships. 2 IMGs matched into programs at Mayo (heme-onc and neph) and one at Northwestern (neph). The breakdown for the other IMGs who matched into UAMS fellowships are as follows: 3 heme-onc, 1 pulm/crit care, 1 cards, 1 endo, 1 neph. The Chief Resident who did not get a GI fellowship was underqualified; he got zero outside interviews. Another Chief matched into an excellent GI program at Nebraska. 2 of the upcoming 3 Chief Residents are IMGs by the way.
The cap on university hospital gen med teams is 16 (one upper level resident and 2 interns); at the VA it is 18 (one upper level resident and 3 interns). Caps on other inpatient specialty teams are less. Long call for an upper level ward resident occurs twice to 3 times a month.
There is no indication that UAMS will change its position on H1 visas.
Just wanted to say that the super-negative post above about UAMS has been posted at several other threads on this site, and also on some other web sites that I have seen. Apparently, someone has an axe to grind, and is trying to sabotage their own program, which in itself gives you an idea about their credibility.
I just finished residency at UAMS, and it's an excellent place to learn how to practice Internal Medicine. I can tell you that I am in close contact with some current UAMS residents and many of the former residents, and most of them will say the same thing. There are a few bad apples in any batch, and my guess is that IMDoc80 is one of them.
I'll post more if anyone wants real information about UAMS.
