So I was accepted at one of these schools (UB, off the waitlist for those who are concerned) and am waitlisted at the other two. Which one of the three is best? Just curious what other people think, cause they're all the same price. I rank proximity to NYC as a big deal, but every day closer to the start of school (a seemingly early Aug 11 for UB) the easier it is to say screw debating, I'll just go to UB.

So... opinions?

I haven't applied yet but those are my 3 fav. schools and I hope to be in the same dilemma as you in a couple years. I live about 10 minutes from Upstate and I think if you get off the waitlist you might want to consider it, but if you like NYC for instance don't expect "big city" to be part of the Upstate experience. Upstate is swell because basically situated in the middle of college town.

hey Scotches,

I was accepted to both UB and SB, and I will be attending SB this year. In terms of reputation ( I'm sure i'll get yelled at by somebody, remember its only an opinion), SB has the best, but UB is also highly reputable. Both have excellent research opportunities, and both will train you to be an excellent physician. I think you should go to the one that you feel most comfortable with, and will be happiest at, and not worry about the reputations too much.

If you're a winter person, and love (and i mean LOVE) snow, then buffalo or upstate might be good for you. but if you want half-decent weather, then spending four years on long island isn't so bad. SB is an hour and a half from NYC by train, which isn't so bad, but SB is way out east on long island, and its definitely not an urban environment.

All three schools you mentioned have associated undergraduate institutions, so there will be that 'college' atmosphere at all three, if that's what you want. The area surrounding SB is beautiful, you can live in some really nice areas. But then again, the cost of living at Buffalo is much less than SB. I don't think you can go wrong with either (and i'm only speaking of UB and SB because those are the ones i got into, not because i have anything against upstate). also keep in mind where you want to do residency, b/c if i remember a good portion of UB people stay in the UB area.

--just my 2 cents

I concur with Cory:

Make sure you select the school also based on curriculm.
I don't know if SB is as integrated as UB. NYC will be very far from SB when your in Med school. You will not have time to spend 2-4 hours driving to a club or something in NYC.

But if you want to live in NYC than choose SB if you get in. You can roate in a hospital and get into a residency much easier.

yeah, Doc AdamK is right about that. definitely take a good look at the curriculum and see which one suits what you are looking for best. and heck, if you don't mind flying, hop on Jet Blue from UB to NYC, and you'll be there in 45 minutes...and i know a student at SB who goes into Manhattan all the time, if you make the room in your schedule for it. you can study and read on the train in.

and just a clarification before someone catches me, I don't think Upstate is actually affiliated with Syracuse University, but still they are in the same town. could be wrong though...

Upstate is not affiliated with Syracuse University

No it ain't but it should be since they share the same territory

interesting opinions - I really don't have a problem with the environments at any of these places. Buff seems like the best city environment, but I've spent considerable time in the SB and upstate areas and could live there just fine as well. I'll let you know if I stop clogging up those waitlists.

Yeah, stop clogging the Upstate waitlist! j/k...kind of 😉

hey i dont want to hijack the thread or anything, but as you guys seem to know something about the SUNY's, any opinions on downstate? i'll be applying to all 4 this summer, fyi

I had a MD PhD interview there.

I didn't like the area. I thought I was going to need an armed bodyguard.

The buildings are much more run down.

The anatomy lab was pitful compared to UB and SB. The basement that is all I have to say.

Those where my impressions

with all my talk of how i'd like to stay closer to home (queens) i actually took myself off the waitlist at downstate, which is about 20 min from my house when I was accepted to buffalo. I wasn't too impressed with the school, I have no problem with the area safety wise, but it didn't seem like a real close community or campus environment, which is totally lame in my eyes.

wow, sorry about the impossibly bad grammar - 3 weeks out of college and already i'm slipping.
