Having been through dental school several years ago and through a 3 year ortho residency with grads from all of these programs, I would say that UPenn grads got the best didactic medical education, and may/may not have gotten a slightly higher avg part I board score. However, the OSU and UB students got a much more comprehensive clinical experience. This is not to say that UPenn grads are clinically inept, just that while comparing experiences and noting abilities in residency, it is apparent there is a difference. I can tell you that coming from UB, you don't know what you are getting until you get out and compare yourself. Residency directors often said to me during my interviews, "You guys from Buffalo really get a great clinical education." Only after having both of those experiences, am I able to confidently say that UB does in fact prepare you well.

To each their own though. Some enjoy the medical, didactic knowledge part. I, and many of my classmates and colleagues were able to get a great clinical education at buffalo and do well enough (on boards, etc) to specialize.

Hope this is somewhat helpful and doesn't come across as too negative/positive for any of these schools. Only my honest firsthand experience.

^^ Right on. Yea, I'm gonna go with UB too. See you there in the fall if you choose to! FWIW, when I interviewed there the D4s were already done with their requirements in NOVEMBER and they still got until May to really learn more stuff. Having you're own offertory is a huge plus as well as the price tag and small class size. The price difference between schools on a monthly loan payment means the sooner you're able to buy a practice and less time as an associate. You'll save roughly 1k-2k a month for the next 25 years vs going to a more expensive school. This money 1-2k saved will affect your lifestyle as a practicing dentist as many professionals have come to tell me when I ask for advice outside of SDN. Good luck with your decision

I have decided to attend UB. I got a really good vibe from that school when I Was there. And I really think their clinical program is one of the best!
