Hello. I’m a 3rd year medical student at Boston U. I’m starting to think ahead about residency and was wondering specifically about UC Davis. I know that UCSF/UCLA/Stanford are all very competitive, but how good of a program is Davis? I actually grew up in Sacramento, and I wouldn’t mind going back there, but I just wanted to know…..

1. How hard is it to match there (I had good board scores. Still working on 3rd year grades)

2. How good is the program?

3. What are some good/bad parts to the program?

I interviewed there last year and liked it very much. Good solid residents and pretty friendly place. The director is fantastic and the other faculty I met seemed approachable and smart. The research opportunities are not as available as the other programs you mentioned but still plenty enough to get something done during residency. I was impressed enough to end up ranking it second, despite not being thrilled with Sacramento.

It has a great variety of patient populations, mixes tertiary w/ bread and butter, and is said to have great teaching and a friendly laid back atmosphere. The fellowship placement is pretty good from what I have heard. The clinical rep is strong, but academic rep is lacking. I believe it is not too competitive because the academic rep isn't 1st tier. That means you should have no problem matching there coming from BU unless you have some red flags on your app or less than mediocre performance. Remember, IM is a "buyers market." The only "competive" places are the obvious ones and that is usually based more on academic rep (NIH funding) than clinical training. I wouldn't be surprised if UCD is on par w/ the big 3 from Cali in clinical training.

Good luck!

I did a couple of clerkships at UCD as a visiting student, and was quite impressed with the place. I, too, am from Sacramento and want to move back to this area.
The faculty and residents that I worked with were all very personable and cared about teaching. They often took the time to teach, either after rounds or at the end of the day. I found them all to be quite approachable and non-threatening. Dr. Henderson, the program director, is excellent in teaching as well. I picked up quite a bit of info from him during morning report etc., as did many others, I"m sure. The ancillary services and facilities at UCD are also top-notch.
What I liked most was how hands-off the attendings were. Residents pretty much did most of the patient-care on their own, and let students/interns do the same in turn. That is the best way to learn. All in all, great program. I will be ranking it at the top of my list.
Good luck!

could I get some more uptodate opinions on the UC Davis categorical program? I'm interested in a future in GI or Pulm/CC. Not tied to any geographical region.

Thanks!
